Following an incredible six days of competition at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships, ten athletes have been confirmed as Gold Crown winners and will each collect 50,000EUR prize for delivering the best overall performances in their event category.
The sprints and hurdles Gold Crowns were awarded to the 400m hurdles winners Karsten Warholm of Norway and Femke Bol of the Netherlands.
Olympic champion and world record holder Warholm won the men’s title for the third successive occasion in 46.98, equating to 1285 points in the World Athletics Scoring Tables to take the prize. Whilst Bol ran a championship record of 52.49 to score 1253 and win the women’s award.
More glory for double winners
The middle and long distance awards were won by double champions Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway who won the men’s 1500m and 5000m and Italy’s Nadia Battocletti, who won the women’s 5000m and 10,000m double.
Ingebrigtsen won for his 1500m win in 3:31.95 worth 1217 points and Battocletti for her victory in the 5000m in 14:35.29, worth 1211 points.
Throws superstars crowning performances
The Gold Crowns in the throws’ disciplines were secured by Italy’s men’s shot put winner Leonardo Fabbri (22.45m/1267 points) and Croatia’s seven-time women’s discus winner Sandra Elkasevic (67.04m/1201 points).
The jumps competitions went right to the last night in the Stadio Olimpico and were won by Swedish pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis (6.10m/1294 points) and German winner of the women’s long jump, Malaika Mihambo (7.22m/1275 points).
Finally, the combined category of road, combined events and relays were both collected by multi-eventers. Decathlete Johannes Erm of Estonia with his gold medal winning total of 8764 which equated to 1245 points and heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium who scored 6848, which was worth 1242 points to scoop the prize.
The initiative was introduced by the European Athletics Council for the first time at Roma 2024 to incentivise the best European athletes to deliver their best performances at a European Athletics Championships.
