Amela Terzić won Serbia’s first gold of the championships in Tallinn this evening as she ran away from Türkiye’s Esma Aydemir over the final lap of the women’s 3000m to claim the title and a personal best of 9:17.61.
Aydemir finished exactly two seconds behind, a PB for her too, while Lisa Jí¤sert of Germany was a distant third in 9:30.23.

Terzić’s tactics were simple – take it on from the gun and keep going. She reduced a leading group of eight to four with just 800m left. But a hard penultimate lap cut that to two as Terzić held off Aydemir at the bell.
“The last kilometre was really hard for me,” she said later.
She’d saved enough though, and pulled away in the home straight to take a well-earned victory.
It may not be her last, for Terzić goes for gold again in her favourite event, the 1500m, tomorrow.
“I can’t say whether I will do well or not because I am very tired at the moment,” she said.
