The women’s hammer promises to be the most exciting contest of the meet with all the three Olympic medallists Tatyana Lysenko of Russia, Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland and Germany’s Betty Heidler in fray.
In the men’s field, London 2012 gold medallist Krisztian Pars of Hungary will be up against a quality hammer field that includes the likes of Poland´s Pawel Fajdek, Olympic finalists Lukas Melich, Oleksiy Sokyrskyy and Kiril Ikonnikov.
Double-Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland will face Canada’s Dylan Armstrong who missed out on a shot put medal in London.
Organizers are hopeful of a fast race in the men’s 100m, which could see a first ever sub 10 sec race in Slovakia. The field includes two members of
Jamaican 4x100m relay team that set a world record in London - Nesta Carter, who ran a season’s best 9.95 at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne on Thursday, and Mike Frater. Other athletes in contention are Jamaica’s Lerone Clarke, Trinidad and Tobago’s Keston Bledman and Dwain Chambers of Great Britain.
The women’s 100m hurdles race could be one of the highlights of the evening with Olympic silver medallist Dawn Harper of the USA, who still owns the meet record 12.57 that she set in 2009, up against a group of quality runners headed by 2008 Olympic medalist Priscila Lopes-Schliep, Kristi Castlin of the USA and Beate Schrott of Austria.
The men’s 800m will feature promising Kenyan runner Edwin Melly, who is expected to register the first sub 1:46 of the meeting.
Women 100m will see a battle of three relay medallists from London. American Jeneba Tarmoh will be up against Jamaican Samantha Henry-Robinson and the Ukraine’s Khrystyna Stuy. Jamaica’s Sheri-Ann Brooks and Laverne Jones-Ferrette from US Virgin Islands are also expected to challenge the top names in the race.
Kenya’s Lydia Chepkurui, who clocked 9:14.98 at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm last week, will be the top name in the women’s 3000m steeplechase along with European Athletics Championships medallist Svitlana Shmidt of Ukraine and Ethiopia’s former world junior record holder Almaz Ayana.
The top name in the men’s pole vault is Steve Lewis of Great Britain who confirmed his form with a clearance of 5.80m for a third place at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne on Thursday.
European javelin champion Vitezslav Vesely of the Czech Republic will treat the meeting as a warm-up competition before the Diamond League final in Zurich. He will nevertheless try to improve his own meet record of 82.89m.
Top race walker and local star Matej Toth will showcase his abilities in a specially organised 3000m track walk event.
