The first day of the heptathlon saw the Ukraine's Lyudmila Yosipenko leading with 3785 points, 46 ahead of Ida Antoinette Nana Djimou of France with Sweden's Jessica Samuelson in bronze just one point down.
With only 104 points covering the first six athletes, there is everything to play for on day two.
Yosipenko took the lead in the shot put with a heave of 14.32 and consolidated that with a solid 200m.
Nana Djimou, however, has never been out of the top three after leading after the hurdles when she set a PB.
A strong shot was crucial to Samuelson's march up the leader board when she moved from 12 in the hurdles to 10th in the high jump and then leapfrogged several places to fourth with a shot of 14.91.
The Swede's 24.30 in the 200m was good enough to move her into the bronze medal position overall, but only by one point over Eliska Klucinova of the Czech Republic.
Hurdles
France's Ida Antoinette Nana Djimou took an early lead after the first event with a 13.11PB, giving her 1,108 points.
Estonia's European U23 winner from 2011, Grit Sadeiko, is second after her 13.36 PB, earning 1,071 points (-37).
Equalling her PB of 13.42 was the Ukraine's Lyudmila Yosipenko who is third.
Altogether, there were seven PBs in the three heats, including one PB equalled.
Sofia Ifantidou of Greece, winner in Dezenzano in May, won the first heat in 13.82, close to her season's best 13.76.
Small wonder Sadeiko was delighted with her 13.36PB in heat two, it was an improvement of over half a second. Potential medallist, Aiga Grabuste of Latvia was second in 13.66, a season's best.
The third and final heat saw Nana Djimou shoot into the lead overall with a 13.11PB, an improvement of 0.04 over her previous best. Yosipenko was second in 13.42. Panteleya was not at her sharpest in sixth, half a second off her PB set this season.
High Jump
At the conclusion of the High Jump, Nana Djimou had dropped to third overall after a below-par 1.77. This season the Frenchwoman has cleared 1.82, 1cm off her all-time best.
The new leader was Russia's Yekaterina Bolshova who went over 1.86 for 1054 points and a total of 2081.
Latvia's Laura Ikauniece moved up from fourth to second with a 1.83 clearance, 19 points off the lead.
Shot Put
A heave of 14.32PB (815) was good enough to take Yosipenko to the top of the leader board on 2818, up from fourth.
Nana Djimou, however, had moved back up to second with a best throw on the day of 13.48, leaving her only 10 points behind the Ukrainian.
The new third placer was Eliska Klucinova of the Czech Republic courtesy of a 14.21 put worth 808.
The event winner was the host country's Niina Kelo with 15.06 for a season's best. Jessica Samuelson's 14.91SB moved her up to fourth, just 12 points off the bronze medal position.
200m
Sadeiko drew first blood winning in 24.10, her second personal best of the day after her hurdles time during the morning session.
Nana Djimou took the second heat in a season's best 24.52, while Klucinova responded with a personal best 24.56.
Yosipenko set the second fastest time in heat three, 24.14.
