World and European silver medallist Jorinde van Klinken broke her five-year-old Dutch record at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational in Ramona on Saturday (12).
In a competition won by Valarie Sion (nee Allman) with a world lead of 73.10m, Van Klinken threw 70.76m in the third round to break her previous Dutch record of 70.22m before improving to 70.99m on her sixth attempt.
Behind Van Klinken, former European U20 and U23 champion Alida Van Daalen also took full advantage of the optimal wind conditions in Ramona. She added almost three metres to her previous lifetime best, improving from 66.31m to 69.17m.
With the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham less than four months away, Croatia's Sandra Elkasevic will be targeting a record-extending eighth successive title in the discus but the Dutch duo of Van Klinken and Van Daalen will be among those looking to dethrone the dominant Croatian.
Another British record for Okoye
The world record remained intact in the men's discus but four throwers broke the 70 metre-barrier in the final leg of the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational.
Matt Denny took the victory in 73.58m ahead of Germany's Steven Richter with 72.47m with Great Britain's 2022 European bronze medallist Lawrence Okoye third with a national record of 71.88m.
This was the fourth time Okoye has broken the British discus record with his first national record dating all the way back to 2011 when he threw 67.63m at the age of 19.
Reigning European champion Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia concluded his trip to Ramona with a best mark of 70.94m to finish fourth.
