They have lively eyes, a genuine spirit, and the pride that comes from belonging to a land that knows how to smile as it builds its future.
Their names are Velino and Sabina, and they are the symbolic faces of Rieti 2026, the European Athletics U18 Championships taking place in Italy at the Guidobaldi Stadium from 16-19 July 2026. These two colourful porcupines were created to represent the identity of the Rieti area, which manifests itself not only through sport.
Velino is named after the river that flows through Rieti. He embodies strength, perseverance, and pride. Velino is a dynamic and athletic character with a determined expression. He symbolises courage and the will to work hard to achieve one's goals, while also reflecting the city's beauty: its nature, history, architecture, and sporting tradition.

On the other hand, Sabina represents the hospitality of an ancient land and serves as a guardian of culture and traditions. Her name evokes the historic Sabina region, the mother of Rome, and embodies the province of Rieti's rural, human heart. Here, hospitality, art, and nature coexist in harmony. Sabina wears the colours of the countryside and villages: warm, understated, and full of energy.
Together, Velino and Sabina serve as the living image of Rieti 2026. Their goal is clear: to become ambassadors for the city, capable of sharing with the world the message of a territory rich in identity and pride.
