What to watch

Host club Playas de Castellon field a typically strong team including SPAR European cross country champion Thierry Ndikumwenayo and European indoor bronze medallist Lester Lescay in the 5000m and long jump respectively.

Their ranks are also strengthened by the inclusion of Spanish-based Ethiopian Likina Amebaw, who finished second behind Faith Kipyegon in the 5000m in the Shanghai Diamond League on Saturday, in both the 3000m and 5000m.

However, the hosts will face tough competition from Sporting Clube de Portugal whose team includes world indoor long jump champion Gerson Balde and Ukraine's Mykhaylo Kokhan and Enka Sport Club whose ranks include 2023 European indoor triple jump champion Tugba Danismaz who will be doing double duty having also been entered for the long jump.

Balde, the reigning world indoor long jump champion, will be representing Sporting in the long jump as well as the high jump. He has cleared 2.10m this year although he does have ownership of a respectable lifetime best of 2.23m albeit dating back to 2020.

Also on the team is Ukraine's Kokhan, an Olympic and European bronze medallist, who sits in second in the hammer world list after throwing 81.26m in April. In fact, Sporting Clube will have high hopes of a hammer double as their squad also includes Denmark's Katrine Koch Jacobsen who won the European Throwing Cup title in March with a a national record of 75.52m in March.

World and Olympic shot put finalist Jessica Inchude, former European 4x100m champion Tatjana Pinto and 2025 world indoor 800m bronze medallist Patricia Silva (800/1500m) also add to Sporting’s strong team alongside veteran sprinter Lorene Bazolo (200m) and distance runners Nuno Pereira (1500m) and Jose Carlos Pinto (3000m).

Türkiye’s Enka Sports Club includes Danismaz but also Necati Er (long jump/triple jump), the 2019 European U23 champion, Berke Akçam (400m hurdles), the 2021 world and European 400m hurdles U20 champion, and Emel Dereli (shot put) who took bronze at the 2016 European Athletics Championships.

Other stars to look out for are Italy’s Gloria Hooper and Anna Polinari, who have both taken relay medals at the European Athletics Championships and will be racing for Athletica Brescia 1950.

Spain's Esperanca Cladera will also be competing in the 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m for Valencia Club Atletismo after taking bronze at the World Relays earlier this month and silver at the same event last year.
