  • Weekend roundup| Zarbo sets French 10km record of 31:00 in Prague

Alessia Zarbo won the women's race at the Birell 10k Night Race Prague on Saturday (6) evening in a French record.

The Paris 2024 Olympian stopped the clock at 31:00 to win in gun-to-tape fashion, shaving one second off the previous mark.

“It was my very first time racing in Prague, and I’m extremely happy with the performance. I actually visited Prague about ten years ago with my father, who was playing poker at the Hilton. It’s very special to come back and set a record here,” she said.

Behind Zarbo, another Olympian Tereza Hrochova, who has represented Czechia in the marathon at the last two Olympic Games, finished second on home soil in a Czech record of 31:38, lowering her national record for the second time in 2025.

In an all-domestic men’s race, Damian Vich took the victory in a dominant 28:46. This was the fastest time set by a Czech athlete in the 28-year history of the race. It was part of the Birell Grand Prix Prague, which also included the adidas Women's 5k Run Prague.

Abdi and McColgan make the podium in South Shields

On his comeback from injury, Bashir Abdi was second in the Great North Run half marathon on Sunday (7) morning.

The two-time Olympic marathon medallist, who is on the comeback from a broken toe, clocked 60:58 to finish a close second behind Kenya’s 2024 London Marathon winner Alexander Mutiso in 60:52.

In the women’s race, McColgan had to settle for third on home soil in 69:42 behind Kenyans Sheila Chepkirui (69:32) and 2016 Olympic 5000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot (69:37).

Abdi has committed to the Chicago Marathon in October while McColgan will be racing in the New York Marathon in November.

Also en route to the New York Marathon where she will be making her marathon debut, Jessica Warner-Judd won the Big Half in South London in 70:35 by a clear margin over former European cross country bronze medallist Abbie Donnelly in 71:24.

Jack Rowe was a convincing winner of the men’s race in 64:08. This was his third victory in this race, equalling Mo Farah’s record.

At the German 10km Championships in Siegburg on Sunday (7), Esther Pfeiffer won the women’s race in 32:24 ahead of Fabienne Konigstein (32:35) with 2022 European 5000m champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen third in 32:47.

Simon Boch won the men's title in 28:32 ahead of Filimon Abraham (28:36) and Hendrik Pfeiffer (28:38).
