The women's 10,000m promises to be one of the most intriguing contests of Birmingham 2026, with reigning champion Nadia Battocletti potentially bidding for a historic distance double against an ever-improving field of record-breaking runners.
Two years ago in Rome, the Italian thrilled the home crowd by winning both the 5000m and 10,000m titles. Since then, she has established herself among the world's very best, claiming Olympic and World Championship silver medals and confirming her status as Europe's outstanding distance runner.
Now, back on the continental stage, Battocletti will attempt to become the first woman to complete the European 5000m/10,000m double at consecutive championships.
With the 5000m final on Tuesday (11) and the 10,000m on Friday (15), it will be no easy task.
The 10,000m field is packed with emerging talent, led by European leader Maureen Koster, Great Britain's Megan Keith, Poland's remarkable Elżbieta Glinka and Slovenia's road specialist Klara Lukan, all of whom will be determined to prevent the Italian from making yet more history.

Nadia Battocletti arrives in Birmingham as the woman to beat. Since sweeping the 5000m and 10,000m titles in Rome, the Italian has added Olympic and World Championship silver medals to her growing collection and continues to redefine the standards of European distance running.
Uniquely, she is the reigning European champion on the track, road and cross country.
Attempting to retain one title is difficult enough; defending both crowns at the same championships would further cement her place among the continent's all-time greats.
Maureen Koster, the 2015 European Indoor 3000m silver medallist, has enjoyed one of the finest seasons of her long and distinguished career.
Better known for her exploits over the shorter distances, namely the 1500m and 3000m, the Dutch athlete has stepped up superbly to the 10,000m this year, running a European-leading 30:50.31.
After finishing fourth in the 5000m at both Munich 2022 and Rome 2024, Birmingham presents a major opportunity for the 33-year-old to claim the first major outdoor medal of her career.
Koster is also set to race in Tuesday's 5000m final, whilst the other major contenders will concentrate their efforts on the 10,000m.
Great Britain's Megan Keith will carry home hopes after a remarkable rise over the past two seasons. The reigning European bronze medallist also briefly held the European 10km road record earlier this year before Klara Lukan lowered the mark to become the first European woman to break 30 minutes.
Owning one of the quickest personal bests in the field, the Scot has already shown she thrives in championship racing, having recently won 5000m bronze at the Commonwealth Games.
Few athletes have a more remarkable story than Elżbieta Glinka.
The Pole only took up running recreationally, clocking a 1:33:51 half marathon in 2022, before progressing rapidly through the domestic ranks. This year, she announced herself on the international stage by winning the European 10,000m Cup in La Spezia.
Her extraordinary rise makes her one of the most intriguing contenders in Birmingham.
Slovenia's Klara Lukan has enjoyed one of the most remarkable road-running campaigns in European history.
The 24-year-old became the first European woman to break 30 minutes for 10km, setting a continental record of 29:50 after a remarkable three-month spell this year that saw the record successively lowered by Jana Van Lent, Eilish McColgan and Megan Keith.
Having translated that endurance onto the track with equally impressive performances this season, Lukan arrives in Birmingham with genuine medal ambitions.
Reigning European silver medallist Diane Van Es also returns, ensuring two of the medallists from Rome are back alongside Battocletti.
Combined with the cream of continental women's distance running, it all points towards one of the highest-quality women's 10,000m finals in recent championship history.
