The women's 5000m promises to be one of the must-see distance races of Birmingham 2026, with defending champion Nadia Battocletti returning as the woman everyone wants to beat.
The Italian produced one of the defining performances of the last European Athletics Championships when she stormed to 5000m gold in Rome before completing a memorable distance double in the 10,000m.
She also left the Italian capital with the championships record, but her path to another title will be anything but straightforward.
Maureen Koster has emerged as Europe's form athlete this summer after defeating Battocletti and France's Sarah Madeleine at the Rome Diamond League, setting up what promises to be a fascinating battle for continental honours.

Battocletti has become one of Europe's outstanding championship performers. Her distance double in Rome was one of the highlights of the championships, while her championships record of 14:35.29 underlined her class.
She has since embarked on an unrivalled medal spree, winning two successive European cross country titles, European 10km road gold, Olympic and world 10,000m silver, world 5000m bronze and world Indoor 3000m gold.
Although Koster got the better of her at the Rome Diamond League earlier this summer, the Italian was still suffering from the after-effects of flu and has repeatedly shown she saves her very best for major championships. Her tactical awareness, relentless strength and finishing speed make her the clear favourite to retain her crown.
But Koster arrives in Birmingham with confidence at an all-time high. The 34-year-old Dutch athlete has enjoyed the finest season of her career and announced herself as a genuine title contender by producing a European-leading 14:33.56 in Rome.
Long regarded as one of Europe's most talented distance runners, she could finally be set to add to the solitary major medal she won when taking European indoor 3000m silver in Prague in 2015.
Ireland's Sarah Healy adds another fascinating dimension to the race. Best known for her achievements over 1500m and 3000m, the reigning European indoor 3000m champion has successfully stepped up in distance while retaining her finishing speed.
If the pace proves tactical, few athletes in the field will fancy their chances against Healy over the closing lap.
Bronze medallist last time around, Spain's Marta Garcia has raced sparingly this year, but she won a tactical 5000m final at the recent Spanish Championships. She has the nous and ability to threaten for a medal again this time.
Great Britain's Innes FitzGerald is the emerging talent hoping to shine on home soil. After a remarkable breakthrough campaign in 2025, the multiple European U20 champion has raced more selectively on the track this season as she continues her long-term development.
Still only 20, FitzGerald possesses enormous potential and, backed by the Birmingham crowd, could announce herself on the senior stage with a major performance.
