| Great Britain's Jodie Williams blasted to a championships record 11.18 to win the 100m gold in Tallinn on Friday. |
It was another superb display from world champion Jodie Williams as the Briton burned up the track in the women's 100m final to take gold in 11.18, a championships record by three hundredths and another national junior record for the teenager.
Williams' concentration at the start was superb despite a faulty start which saw them all return to the blocks for a second time. Unruffled, the Briton merely went back to position and blasted out away, pulling ahead of the field and stretching her lead over the second half to win with a quarter of a second to spare.
'Going into the race I was very nervous and then the mishap at the start I was really nervous,' admitted Williams afterwards. 'But in the end it wall worked out well for me.'
Indeed it did, as she left Dutch sprinter Jamile Samuels to scrap for second in 11.43, a PB for her, while Germany's Tatjana Lofamakanda Pinto sneaked ahead of Türkiye's Nimet Karakus for bronze in 11.48.
Just 17, Williams has already amassed an impressive collection of titles, including world youth, world junior and now the European junior title not won by a Briton since Sonia Lannaman 38 years ago.
She'd said after the semis that she'd saved a bit for the final, and she was true to her word, taing a championships record that's stood since 1985.
'To tell you the truth I didn't care about the place but of course I am content to add gold to the boys' silver and bronze,' said Williams referring the medals won by compatriots in the men's final just minutes before.
'Setting the championships record is just a little added bonus.'
