World and European U20 mountain running gold medallist Julia Ehrle was a dominant winner on day one of the German Cross Country Championships in Darmstadt on Saturday (29).
The multi-talented Ehrle, who also won 5000m bronze at the 2025 European Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere, proved her versatility with a brilliant front-running display to take victory in the women’s U20 race over 4.5km.
The performance establishes the 18-year-old as a medal contender for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa on 14 December, where she will be looking to improve on her highly creditable fourth-place finish last year in Antalya.
She covered the Bürgerpark course in 16:28, finishing 13 seconds clear of Emily Junginger, who outsprinted Lera Miller for silver.
Ehrle told the German Athletics Federation website: “My goal is always to get the best possible result, but you never know if it will work out. I tried to break away from the others — that wasn't easy because the other girls were incredibly strong. They stayed with me for a long time. That’s why I’m even more pleased that I managed to do it against such strong competition.
“The course was pretty flat, but with all the curves and changing surfaces — sometimes grass, sometimes mud — it was very varied and not easy. It was definitely strenuous! At the European Cross Country Championships, as always, I want to get the best possible result so I can say at the finish line that I gave it my all.”
Burkhard wins women's middle distance race
Day one also featured middle-distance races for senior men and women over 3.8km. In the women’s race, Elena Burkard, a two-time European 3000m steeplechase finalist, ran clear to take gold.

In the men’s race, Florian Bremm — seventh at 3000m at the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn — cruised to an impressive victory with an unrelenting front-running performance from the gun.
The men’s U20 race was among the closest contests of the day, with seven athletes still in contention after 3km of the 4.5km distance. In the final kilometre, Levin Saveur and David Scheller pressed ahead to make it a straight fight for gold. Scheller delivered the decisive kick with 300 metres to go to claim the title.
Sunday’s programme will see the senior races contested over the long course, with the women’s field headed by three-time European gold medallist Konstanze Klosterhalfen, European 10km silver medallist Eva Dieterich, two-time European cross country bronze medallist Alina Reh, world and European mountain running champion Nina Engelhard, and European U23 10,000m silver medallist Kira Weis.
