<h2>European Athletics Team Championships</h2>
<p>Italy were crowned champions at the European Athletics Team Championships for the first time in Silesia ahead of reigning champions and hosts Poland and four-time winners Germany.</p>
<p>In a new-look format for the event, all three divisions were held under one roof in the same location across six days as part of the third edition of the European Games in Krakow-Małopolska.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ireland were the first champions to be anointed in the 3rd Division where Albania's Luiza Gega also created history by becoming the joint most successful athlete in European Athletics Team Championships history, her wins in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase taking her tally up to 11 victories.</p>
<p>Hungary dominated the 2nd Division, winning the title ahead of Ukraine and Lithuania who pipped Slovenia for the third promotion spot by an agonising 0.5 points. Both Hungary and Lithuania will be making their debuts in the top division of the European Athletics Team Championships in 2025.</p>
<p>In the main spectacle which occupied the last three days of the championships, Italy improved on their runner-up finish from two years ago with a dominant victory. The Italians won seven of the 37 events and tallied a score of 426.5 points ahead of Poland (402.5 points) and Germany (387.5. points) with Spain fourth with 352 points.</p>
<p>At the other end of the table, Norway, T&uuml;rkiye and Belgium occupied the last three places and were relegated into the 2nd Division in 2025. &nbsp;The Belgian team were relegated despite the best efforts of shot putter-turned hurdler Jolien Boumkwo who garnered worldwide admiration and attention after stepping in as a last minute replacement for the injured Anne Zagre in the 100m hurdles.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Individual highlights across the six days included Femke Bol from the newly promoted Netherlands winning the 400m in 49.82 to smash her championship record of 50.37 and Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh winning the discus in the 2nd Division with 69.94m to break the championship record held by his coach Gerd Kanter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The 2025 edition of the European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division will be held in Madrid, Spain from 27-29 June.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>It was a record-breaking week for the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor and Madrid with 13 championships records, three world leads, eight European leads and 56 national records set across 1st, 2nd and 3rd Division competitions.</strong></p>
<p>It included Ja&euml;l Bestu&eacute;&rsquo;s sensational women&rsquo;s 200m win at the 1st Division in Madrid in 22.19 that was a new championship record, a new Spanish record and a European lead. It was a time that slashed 0.19 from Sandra Myers&rsquo; national record which had stood since 1991.</p>

<p>After a rare fallow period in his career, Olympic, world and European champion Miltiadis Tentoglou re-asserted his global dominance of the men&rsquo;s long jump, soaring to a superb world lead of 8.46m at the 1st Division in Madrid.</p>
<p>Not to outdone, there was a brilliant world lead set at the 2nd Division in Maribor where European champion Victoria Hudson landed her spear at 67.76m, a new Austrian national record. Here&rsquo;s a run down of every record set during the 2025 European Athletics Team Championships:</p>

I used to play football, and I love the team aspect of it, like playing for a team. <p><strong>European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov has paid tribute to the athletes, officials and organisers at the conclusion of the European Athletics Team Championships which took place in Madrid and Maribor (24-29 June).&nbsp;</strong></p>
<p>Italy retained their 1st Division title in Madrid, whilst Belgium and Iceland won the 2nd and 3rd Division titles respectively in Maribor. &nbsp;Across the three divisions, there were 13 championship records, three world leads, eight European leads and 56 national records.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Azzuri made a successful defence of their European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division title which they won the first time at Silesia 2023.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Aligned with their record-setting medal table-topping performance at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships with 24 medals including 11 golds, it is a truly golden era of Italian athletics.</p>

<p>They held an overnight lead of 24 points on Germany with Poland a further 9.5 behind and on Sunday (29), they kept their nerve in the Estadio Vallehermoso with individual victories by Leonardo Fabbri (men&rsquo;s shot put) and Larissa Iapichino (women&rsquo;s long jump) putting the sheen on their day of victory.</p>
<p>Along with Nadia Battocletti&rsquo;s win in the women&rsquo;s 5000m on Friday (27), Italy had only three individual winners across the entire competition. But it was a victory founded on all-round strength with seven second places and nine fourth place across four days of competition.</p>
<p>Of the 37 events in the programme, Italian athletes were in the top eight in 30 competitions to give them a final total of 431.5. Poland moved up to second on 405.5 confirmed by their ever-reliable mixed 4x400m team, who triumphed in the final event. Germany were third in 397.</p>
<p>The Netherlands were fourth, their highest ever position, with an incredible eight individual victories. The final victories being a superb men&rsquo;s 5000m victory by Niels Laros and a championhip record and European lead in the men's 200m by Xavi Mo-Ajok on Sunday (29).</p>
<p>Despite final day victories from Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Ilona Mononen in the women&rsquo;s high jump and women&rsquo;s 3000m steeplechase, Ukraine (231) and Finland (220.5) were relegated alongside sixteenth placed Lithuania (178.5).</p>

<p><strong>Poland grabbed a thrilling win in the closing event of the Madrid 2025 on Sunday (29), the 4x400m mixed relay as Natalia Buckowiecka&rsquo;s final leg overcame Italy&rsquo;s led for much of the race.</strong></p>

<p>With a strong close, Italy&rsquo;s Edoardo Scotti was the first lead off runner to pass the baton after a powerful leg timed at 44.8 while Poland&rsquo;s Maksymilian Szwed (45.2) and Great Britain&rsquo;s Samuel Reardon (45.3) travelled in hot pursuit.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Boosted by her pole position Virginia Troiani, a 51.06 specialist, posted a fantastic second leg in 49.8 to extend the Italian&rsquo;s lead to a full second over Poland (1:34.6 vs 1:35.6) with Spain (1:36.0) in third thanks to Blanca Herv&aacute;s&rsquo; 50.1 brisk leg.&nbsp;</p>
<p>By then, Great Britain&rsquo;s travelled in fourth (1:36.2) but an awesome leg of 43.6 signed by the Paris 2024 Olympic Games 4x400 bronze medallist Toby Harries put the Britons in contention barely two hundreds behind Italy at the bell (2:19.6/2:19.8) while Spain ran in third in 2.20.4 for Poland&rsquo;s 2.20.7.</p>

<p>The anchor leg proved to be full of excitement and drama as Great Britain&rsquo;s Emily Newnham passed Italy&rsquo;s Alice Mangione with 250m left and Poland&rsquo;s reigning European champion Natalia Bukowiecka overtook Spain&rsquo;s Paula Sevilla with impressive ease to rapidly close the gap with Great Britain and Italy.</p>
<p>The three countries facing the home straight virtually even; finally, Bukowiecka&rsquo;s stunning leg of 48.73 prevailed, to give Poland maximum points thanks to a 3:09.43 performance, a championships record.</p>
<p>Italy and Great Britain were given the same time, just 0.23 adrift, with the Italian&rsquo;s being awarded second on the photo finish. Poland, Italy and fourth-placed Spain (3:10.48) set respective national records.</p>

Apeldoorn is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands and among the largest municipalities in Gelderland. It is a mid-size city with a population of approximately 161,000. Apeldoorn has a charming and lively inner city and a young, sports-minded population.

The town is easily accessible by car (A1 motorway) and train.
