Hosts Great Britain & NI have named a team of 98 athletes for the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships from 10-16 August.
The team is headed by reigning European champions Dina Asher-Smith and Keely Hodgkinson. Asher-Smith, who won 100m gold in Rome two years ago, will contest the 100m and 200m individually while Hodgkinson will aim for a third title in the 800m.
Matthew Hudson-Smith will also be targeting a third European title in the 400m in the Alexander Stadium where he has a temporary stand named after him. He is joined by 2024 European silver medallist Charlie Dobson and Ben Jefferies.
Four-time European champion Zharnel Hughes has been named in the men’s 200m team while two-time European champion Laura Muir and world 800m silver medallist Georgia Hunter Bell have been selected for the women’s 1500m alongside Katie Snowden.
Other recent major medal winners named on the British team include 2022 world champion Jake Wightman in the 1500m, 2019 and 2023 world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the heptathlon and world 200m silver medallist Amy Hunt in the 100m and 200m.
In total, five selected athletes lead the 2026 European list in their respective events: Asher-Smith (22.28, 200m), Hunter Bell (3:55.63, 1500m), Elise Thorner (9:07.39, 3000m steeplechase) and Hughes (20.04, 200m) and Hudson-Smith (44.09, 400m)
One notable absentee from the British team is world mile record-holder Josh Kerr.
“It is worth noting that the European Championships were never part of Josh Kerr's 2026 race programme, with his season being built around his successful world record attempt and representing Scotland in his home Commonwealth Games.
“His intentions were communicated in advance and we supported his decisions around his race programme. We know he’ll be cheering on his team-mates as they line up to compete next month,” said UK Athletics performance director Paula Dunn.
Great Britain & NI won four gold medals at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome and 13 medals in total to finish third on the medal table behind France and hosts Italy.
