In her first race since breaking the European 10km record with 30:08 in Valencia, Great Britain’s Eilish McColgan finished second in the Marugame Half Marathon on Sunday (1) morning in 67:08.
McColgan ran a largely solo race in gusty conditions to finish second behind Kenya’s Dolphine Omare who won in Marugame for the third successive year in 66:15 with her Kenyan teammate Susan Kamotho third in 67:56.
“I was on my own a lot of the time. Men kept coming back to me, which gave me something to target, but they had all gone out too fast and were dying so I kept passing them. There wasn’t anyone I could latch onto,” said McColgan as quoted by Japan Running News.
However, McColgan’s time was still the third fastest of her career so far behind her 66:26 clocking in Ras Al Khaimah in 2022 and her British record of 65:43 for victory at the 2023 Berlin Half Marathon, a time which puts her fourth on the European all-time list.
McColgan’s next big target is the London Marathon on 26 April. She finished eighth in last year’s race on her debut at the distance in 2:24:25.
In the men’s race which was won by Kenya’s Richard Etir in 59:07, former European marathon record-holder Sondre Nordstad Moen from Norway finished eighth in 60:46.
