Anna Matuszewicz broke one of the longest-standing records on the Polish record books on home soil at the Gorzow Jump Festival, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver meeting, on Saturday (31).
The 22-year-old won the long jump with an outright lifetime best of 6.77m for victory, a mark which also surpassed the historic national indoor long jump record of 6.74m which was set by Anna Wlodarczyk all the way back in 1980.
"To be honest, when preparing for the season, I wasn't focused on the record because I knew it could hold me back. I was only thinking about my personal best and minimum, and maybe even a record, so what? But that's not my final word this season," said Matuszewicz as quoted by TVP Sport.
Matuszewicz also sealed the qualifying mark for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Kujawy Pomorze which will take place in her home city of Torun from 20-22 March.
Matuszewicz took the plaudits over Serbia’s Milica Gardasevic with 6.61m while Germany’s Luca Herden won the men’s long jump with a lifetime best of 8.18m ahead of European indoor bronze medallist Lester Lescay from Spain with 8.03m.
Greece’s former world U20 champion Antonios Merlos also cleared a lifetime best of 2.27m for victory in the high jump.
