European Athletics has officially ratified the time of 2:14.52 by Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui on 6 February in Madrid as a European record for the 1000m short track.

Attaoui moved to third on the world indoor all-time list with 2:14.52, breaking the European record of 2:14.96 which was set by Denmark's Wilson Kipketer in 2000, a world record at the time.

Attaoui is looking to build on a successful year last year that saw him take a thrilling championship record win at the Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships over 800m and finish fifth at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

He will also be looking to upgrade his European 800m silver from Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships to gold at the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships in summer.
