Friday (17) marks one year until the Belgrade 2027 European Running Championships starts – just the second edition of this competition.

Over 17 and 18 April 2027 many of the top road runners will compete over 10k, a half marathon or full marathon as they bid to take a European medal on the roads

At the inaugural edition France’s Jimmy Gressier, who went on to become 10,000m world champion, took home the gold in the men’s half marathon, while his countryman Yann Schrub, the recent world indoor 3000m bronze medallist and European 10,000m silver medallist on the track, won the men’s 10km.

Belgium placed 1-2 in the women’s half marathon with Chloe Herbiet taking gold ahead of Juliette Thomas on the first day.

Iliass Aouani of Italy took the men’s marathon gold before going on to take bronze at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

While in the women’s marathon, Spain took the top two spots with both athletes taking their first European medal as Fatima Ouhaddou took gold and Majida Maayouf silver.

Nadia Battocletti also added yet another European title to her ever-growing collection in the women’s 10km.

Belgrade is a trusted and reliable host to many major athletics in events in recent years, including the 2013 SPAR European Cross Country Championships, 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships and 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships.

It has also seen athletes brave the unseasonably hot Serbian elements in the height of winter for the 2024 World Cross Country Championships and is also set to host the SPAR European Cross Country Championships on 13 December this year.
