Some of the most exciting talents in the world will come together to compete at the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships from 17–20 July.

In the men’s field events especially, domestic rivalries could provide added motivation, with several disciplines featuring national teammates who are all strong medal contenders.

Fans will be able to watch all the action from Bergen 2025 live in its entirety via the European Athletics website, thanks to Eurovision Sport. Additional streams will also be available, accompanied by expert English-language commentary.

Jumps

As Olympic, world, and European gold medallist Gianmarco Tamberi nears the later stages of his career, Italy may already be looking for his successor—and there is no shortage of contenders.

Based on personal bests, Matteo Sioli (2.29m), Federico Celebrin (2.26m), and Edoardo Stronati (2.24m) occupy three of the top four spots on the entry lists.

Still only 19, Sioli has already begun making his mark at the senior level, having won bronze at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships and placing second at the recent Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships. Greece’s Antrea Mita, who has cleared 2.26m this year, is expected to challenge the Italian trio.

In the pole vault, Latvia’s Valters Kreišs—fourth in Espoo 2023—has a strong chance of securing his country’s tenth gold medal in European U23 Championships history. He is closely matched with Switzerland’s Valentin Imsand, with both vaulters having achieved personal bests of 5.82m this year.

The horizontal jumps are both headlined by Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Sarâboyukov. A versatile and proven championship performer, Sarâboyukov won high jump silver at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships and added silver medals in both the long jump and triple jump at the Jerusalem 2023 European U20 Championships.

His biggest win to date came with long jump gold at Apeldoorn 2025. He currently tops both the long jump and triple jump entries by personal and season’s bests, making more medals a strong possibility.

Throws

In the men’s hammer, Greek duo Ioannis Korakidis and Angelos Mantzouranis lead the entries. Korakidis, the 2022 world U20 gold medallist, has thrown 76.14m this season. However, Mantzouranis has enjoyed a breakout year in the U.S. collegiate system, extending his personal best to 78.61m. If he can replicate that form in Bergen, he’ll start as the favorite.

The men’s discus promises another compelling national duel. Germany’s Mika Sosna and Steven Richter top the entry list with lifetime bests of 70.05m and 69.61m, respectively, achieved this year. Richter is a two-time European Throwing Cup champion in this age group, while Sosna recently finished second at the Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships. A tight battle is expected.

Germany’s Tizian Lauria leads the shot put entries and is one of only four defending champions from Espoo 2023 returning for Bergen. He is the only entrant to surpass 20 metres this season, with a best of 20.09m.

In the javelin, Ukraine’s Artur Felfner aims to retain his European U23 title. However, several athletes could challenge for gold. Finland’s Eemil Porvari leads the season’s bests with 81.55m, followed by Germany’s Nick Thumm at 80.62m.

Max Dehning is the only athlete in the field to have thrown beyond 90 metres—thanks to his 90.20m at last year’s German Winter Throwing Championships—but he hasn’t matched that this season, with a best of 79.61m.

Decathlon

In the decathlon, the Netherlands’ Jeff Tesselaar leads the entries with a personal best of 8249 points, set in Götzis this May. His previous experience—ninth place in Espoo 2023—should serve him well.

His strongest competition is expected to come from France’s Antoine Ferranti and Great Britain’s Sammy Ball, who have posted personal bests of 8221 and 8100, respectively, both achieved this year.
