It is a great time to be a Scottish athlete with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, and Eilidh Child could become one of the star names.

As she prepares for the winter season, she now has reason to celebrate after being named Scotland's Athlete of the Year.

Child, 26, was already one of the stars at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Göteborg in March.

She was part of the Great Britain gold medal-winning 4x400m relay team and also won silver in the individual 400m. In 2013 she lowered her personal best performances in both the 400m and 400m hurdles.

Then in August, she left the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Moscow with bronze as Britain's relay once more made the podium.

British Athletics confirmed that she will compete at the Glasgow International Match on 25 January.

“Competing in front of a home Scottish crowd is a big thing for me and I’m sure the atmosphere will be electric again just like it was last year,” Child affirmed.

Child won silver in the 400m hurdles at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2010.

“I am hoping to continue this trend next year with the aim of going one better in Glasgow than I did in Delhi three years ago.”

Child intends to compete this year during the indoor season.

“The indoor season presents me with the platform to build towards the Commonwealth Games,' she continued.

Child beat Eilish McColgan, Laura Muir, Libby Clegg, Susan Partridge and Chris O'Hare to the Scottish Athlete of the Year title.

Her performances are largely due to the fact that she this year decided to become a full-time professional athlete.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Child said, “It's made a huge difference being full-time. Everything you do needs to be geared towards athletics.”

“I don't think people realise that you don't just need time to go and train, It's also about having the free time to recover after sessions and for me that's been a huge deal.'

Eilidh Child will certainly look to push even harder in 2014 with the Commonwealth Games and the European Athletics Championships in Zurich looming.
