The Lotto Cross Cup de la province de Liège is one of the most prestigious races on the European cross country calendar and one of Belgium's most experienced athletes will spearhead the home challenge in Hannut on Sunday.

Veerle Dejaeghere triumphed in 19:41 in 2007 and she is back in this small town in the province of Liege for a famous race, which has a top field.

She is joined by teammates Barbara Maveau and Zenobie Vangansbeke as they take on Sifan Hassan and Haftamnesh Tesfay, of Ethiopia, Clarisse Cruz, of Portugal, and the Ukraine's Tatyana Holovchenko.

Dejaeghere, 39, ran for Belgian at the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, where she reached the semi-finals of the 1500m, and in Beijing eight years later.

But the Lotto Cross Cup has brought Dejaeghere great success as she has won the overall series eight times, six of those between 2003 and 2009. Dejaeghere will look to add to her glory on the muddy and snowy fields.

The men's race should be equally competitive with home interest in the shape of Atelaw Yeshetela.

He is joined in the Belgium team by Koen Naert, Stijn Garain and Mats Lunders as they face Ethiopian Dame Tasama, Abrar Osman of Eritrea and Dave Bett of Kenya.
