European marathon champion and world bronze medallist Iliass Aouani has confirmed he will line up at the prestigious Cinque Mulini Cross Country in San Vittore Olona on 23 November.

The Italian has enjoyed a breakout year, striking gold at the inaugural European Running Championships in Brussels–Leuven in April before cementing his rising reputation with a World Championships bronze in Tokyo.

Now best known for his exploits on the roads, Aouani remains no stranger to the mud. He won the Italian cross country title in 2022 and placed 49th at the 2023 SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Brussels.

Historic race

The Cinque Mulini, a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting, is one of the sport’s most storied races. Staged for the 93rd time, it winds through the famous “five mills” of San Vittore Olona — a setting steeped in cross country folklore.

Its roll of honour reads like a who’s who of distance running, with legends such as Kenenisa Bekele, John N’Gugi and Grete Waitz among the past champions.
