World 200m silver medallist Amy Hunt opened her outdoor season at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Florida where she set early season European leading times in both the 100m and 200m this weekend.
She competed in the 200m first, clocking 22.63 into a strong headwind of 2.0m/s before running the 100m in 11.12 (-1.7m/s) the following day.
Both times, despite the strong headwinds, were Hunt's best ever outdoor season openers on the road to the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships from 10-16 August. Hunt has publicly said that her goal is to come away with a sprint treble, a feat which would emulate Dina Asher-Smith's exploits in Berlin 2018.
Incidentally, Asher-Smith also opened her outdoor season in Gainesville by finishing one place behind Hunt in the 200m in 23.03. She also clocked 53.04 in the 400m to finish fifth in her 400m heat in which British teammate Laviai Nielsen finished second in 51.66.
Odey-Jordan runs fastest ever 100m by a European U20
Jake Odey-Jordan, who is based in the United States, broke through the 10 second-barrier in his 100m heat in Gainesville.
The 18-year-old blasted to a 9.94 clocking although the wind was somewhat over the legal limit at 3.3 m/s which means his time will not be eligible for ratification as a European U20 100m record. That record stands to France's Christophe Lemaitre at 10.04 from the 2009 European Athletics U20 Championships.
But either way, Odey-Jordan's time was still the fastest ever 100m by a European U20 in all conditions, surpassing Mark Lewis-Francis' mark of 9.97 (+2.1) from the 2001 World Athletics Championships in Edmonton.
Odey-Jordan was more fortunate with the wind in the men's 200m. He was rewarded with a lifetime best of 20.33 to move to fifth on the European U20 all-time list, taking a notable victory over two-time world 100m medallist Trayvon Bromell from the United States in 20.62.

Odey-Jordan is eligible to compete at both the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon as well as the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships but with both events taking place on back-to-back weeks, the teenager will likely have to choose which championships he will contest in.
He competed at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championships which were held in Lima, Peru, winning bronze in the 200m and silver in the 4x100m at the age of 16.
In a collegiate 400m, France's Samuel Vessat set a big lifetime best of 44.94 to move to third on the French all-time list.
