  • German TV audiences surge past 4.6 million as Birmingham 2026 captures continental primetime

Broadcast ratings for the European Athletics Championships Birmingham 2026 have hit new peaks across Europe, spearheaded by an extraordinary Thursday night in Germany where live coverage on ZDF drew 4.64 million viewers and a 26.6% market share, making it the nation’s most-watched television programme of the day.

The dramatic evening session at Alexander Stadium captivated viewers from Scandinavia to Southern Europe, delivering consistent audience records for public service free-to-air broadcasters.

Records Fall Across Core European Markets

The momentum was led by record-setting figures across major territories, BBC One, NOS, RAI and YLE posting record audience numbers heading into the weekend finals.

  • Germany (ZDF): Captured the top broadcast spot in the country with 4.64 million viewers (26.6% share), building on a daytime session that attracted 1.46 million viewers (23.7% share).
  • United Kingdom (BBC): BBC One set a new championship high on Thursday night with 2.44 million viewers and a 25.7% market share, peaking at 3.11 million. (Friday night BBC ratings update to follow).
  • France (France Télévisions): Primetime coverage on France 2 stepped up significantly to 2.2 million viewers (18.6% share), complemented by 1.7 million on France 3.
  • Italy (RAI): Rai 2 achieved its highest audience of the week with 1.58 million viewers and a 12.3% share.
  • The Netherlands (NOS): Marked four consecutive days of audience growth on NPO 3, setting another record with 371,000 viewers and a 13.3% market share.
  • Nordic Strongholds: Finland’s YLE 2 held over 70% market share for the second consecutive day (856,000 viewers / 73.1% share), while Norway’s NRK1 maintained a dominant 63.6% primetime share.

"To see our broadcast become Germany's most-watched television programme with 4.6 million viewers, alongside records in the UK, Finland, Italy, and the Netherlands, shows the immense reach and emotional pull of European athletics on free-to-air television," said Dobromir Karamarinov, European Athletics President.

Live coverage of the European Athletics Championships Birmingham 2026 continues daily across Europe's public broadcast networks and streaming live on Eurovision Sport.
