European 10,000m champion Andreas Almgren will turn his focus to the half marathon at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on 19-20 September.
This will be just Almgren’s third outing at the half marathon and his first since setting a European record of 58:41 in Valencia last October to become the first European to break the 59 minute-barrier.
“It will be a lot of fun to run. Training has continued to go well after the European Championships in Birmingham, so I aim to be there and fight for victory,” said Almgren as reported by Svensk Friidrott.
This race will also serve as a key test for Almgren as he builds towards his highly-awaited marathon debut in the New York Marathon on 1 November, an announcement which he made just days after winning the 10,000m title at the European Athletics Championships in a championship record of 27:23.66.
The Swedish team for Copenhagen also includes Carolina Wikström in the women’s half marathon, Simon Sundström in the men’s mile and Wilma Nielsen and Vera Sjöberg in the women’s mile.
