Ireland have named a 46-strong team for the Maribor 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 2nd Division on 28-29 June in Slovenia.

The Irish include experienced sprint hurdler Sarah Lavin, a European, world indoor and European indoor finalist and winner when Ireland won promotion from the third tier two years ago in Silesia 2023.

European U23 1500m gold medallist Sophie O’Sullivan is selected for the women’s 800m. There is also a place for Nicola Tuthill in the women’s hammer, the 21-year-old won the women’s U23 competition at the European Throwing Cup in Nicosia in March and recently extended the Irish U23 record to 71.71m.

Sharlene Mawdsley, who ran the final leg to bring home Ireland to a historic mixed 4x400m relay gold at the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships is named in the relay squad.

"A very special event"

Paul McNamara, Athletics Ireland High Performance Director said: “We are delighted to be fielding such a strong team for the 2025 edition of the European Athletics Team Championships.

“This is a very special event, as any athlete that has had the privilege to compete in it knows. The team element brings out the best in our athletes and finishing high up the table is a priority for all.

“We see this event as a critical indicator of our standing amongst European nations, an opportunity to acquire World Ranking points and qualification standards, and to provide valuable international exposure to established and emerging athletes as preparation for upcoming major championships.”
