  • Irish record! Curtin clocks 2:07:54 for victory in Gyeongju Marathon

Fearghal Curtin smashed the Irish marathon record by almost two minutes with a significant and comprehensive victory at the Gyeongju International Marathon in South Korea on Saturday (18) morning.

In just the second marathon of his career, Curtin broke the tape in 2:07:54 to shatter the previous Irish record of 2:09:36 set by Peter Lynch in the Dusseldorf Marathon in April.

Curtin took the victory in Gyeongju by almost three minutes ahead of Ethiopia's Antenayehu Dagnachew in 2:10:33 with Kenya's Stanley Bett third in 2:11:07 to become the first non-African winner of the elite men's race in the history of the race.

This was the second time Curtin has etched his name into the Irish record books in the space of just over one month. The 27-year-old, who is based in Portugal, broke the Irish record in the half marathon last month with a 60:22 clocking in the Copenhagen Half Marathon where he finished eighth in a strong field.

And Curtin isn't done for 2025 just yet. He is also due to contest the Singapore Marathon, a race which is typically held in very hot and humid conditions, on 7 December.
