World 1500m semifinalist José Carlos Pinto won the Hytteplanmila 10km road race in Hole, Norway on Saturday (18) in a Portuguese record of 27:53.

In doing so, Pinto became the first Portuguese athlete to break the 28 minute-barrier for 10km on the roads, shaving seven seconds off Samuel Barata’s mark of 28:00 which was set in Brasov in Romania only two weeks ago.

Pinto won by a commanding distance ahead of his training partner and 2023 world 1500m bronze medallist Narve Gilje Nordas who was a distant second in 28:25. Fellow Norwegian Vegard Vesterhaug Warnes was third in 28:28.

“I'm training well, all the indicators showed that I was at my best, and I approached this race with the intention of breaking the national record,” said Pinto who ran a big negative split of 13:50 having passed the 5km checkpoint in 14:03.

This was the third time the Portuguese 10km record has been broken in 2025. Soon-to-be world 1500m champion Isaac Nader clocked 28:01 at the start of the year in Valencia before Barata and Pinto improved the record to 28:00 and 27:53 respectively.

Just behind the leading three, European U20 5000m bronze medallist Magnus Øyen was fifth in a lifetime best of 28:38 to move to equal third on the European U20 all-time 10km list which is headed by Jakob Ingebrigtsen's 27:54 from 2019.

Still only 18, Øyen will be one of the favourites for an individual medal at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lagoa, Portugal on 14 December after winning gold for Norway in the team race in Antalya last December.

Kristine Eikrem Engeset won a closer women’s race in a lifetime best of 32:03 by two seconds from Sweden’s Carolina Johnson who took a notable victory at the end of September in the Lidingöloppet, the first World Athletics Cross Country Tour Silver event of the 2025-26 season.

Hanne Andersen Maridal finished third in 32:17.
