Minke Bisschops from the Netherlands flew to a wind-assisted 10.89 clocking in the 100m and a wind-legal 22.39 in the 200m at the Eighth edition of the Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting in Vari, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, on Saturday (5) evening.

One week after being part of the Dutch team which was credited with a championship record and national record of 42.02 at the European Athletics Team Championships in Madrid, Bisschops broke the 11 second-barrier in the 100m for the first time in any conditions with 10.89.

Frustratingly for the 22-year-old Bisschops, a following wind of 3.2 m/s means her result won’t count as a lifetime best but her performance suggests her current 100m legal best of 11.17 - which was set in winning the first heat of the 100m at the European Athletics Team Championships to rank third overall - is due for significant revision this summer.

But fortune was on Bisschops’ side in the 200m as she returned later in the programme to win in a massive lifetime best of 22.39 (+1.1) - her previous lifetime best stood at 22.87 - to move to third on the Dutch all-time list behind Dafne Schippers (21.63) and Jamile Samuel (22.37). She also moved up to second place on the European 2025 list for the event.

One week after setting a world lead of 8.46m at the European Athletics Team Championships, Miltiadis Tentoglou was on the cusp of a surprise defeat to his younger compatriot Nikolaos Stamatonikolos who set the standard in the first round with a lifetime best of 8.14m, an improvement of 27 centimetres for the 22-year-old.

Tentoglou - who has not been beaten by a compatriot or on home soil since 2017 and had advertised his appearance in Vari as an attack on the long-standing Greek record of 8.66m, which has belonged to Louis Tsatoumas since 2007 - responded in the last round, as he has done on so many occasions in his esteemed career, with a winning mark of 8.19m to displace Stamatonikolos who retired after taking two jumps.

Stamatonikolos' mark sees him move up to third on this year's U23 lists and propels him into medal consideration for the European Athletics U23 Championships in Bergen, Norway later this month.

Finnish 100m hurdles record-holder Lotta Harala also enjoyed the excellent conditions for fast sprint times in the Athens suburb, with temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius for much of the meeting, racing to a meeting record of 12.86 with a 2.0 m/s breeze on her back.
