European 800m finalist Jemma Reekie smashed the European record in the road mile at the New Balance Kö Meile 2026 in Düsseldorf, Germany on Sunday (6) afternoon.
Reekie took the victory in 4:23.25 ahead of the US duo of Gracie Hyde (4:26.10) and Gracie Morris (4:27.34) to smash the previous European record of 4:30.3 which was set by Marissa Damink from the Netherlands in the same race in 2024.
Reekie has an excellent record in the road mile having twice taken the victory at the prestigious Fifth Avenue Mile in New York with sub-4:20 winning times on both occasions. However, the course is not eligible for record purposes.
Records in the road mile have only been recognised by European Athletics since 2023 and there is a reasonable chance this record will undergo further revision at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on 19-20 September.
Some of the top European entrants include reigning European indoor 1500m and 3000m champions Agathe Guillemot from France and Sarah Healy from Ireland and European 1500m bronze medallist Patricia Silva from Portugal.
