Spain has pre-selected four athletes for the marathon at the inaugural European Running Championships in Brussels-Leuven on 12-13 April 2025.
The women’s team is headed by national record-holder Majida Maayouf who clocked 2:21:01 in the 2022 Valencia Marathon. The 35-year-old just missed her record in this year’s race, clocking 2:21:43 which puts her third on the 2024 European list behind Sifan Hassan (2:18:05) and Calli Hauger-Thackery (2:21:24).
Maayouf, who also finished 17th at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, is joined on the Spanish team by fellow Olympian Esther Navarette (2:24:40 PB) and Fatime Ouhaddou (2:24:05 PB).
The sole male athlete to be pre-selected for the Spanish marathon team thus far is Ibrahim Chakir who finished a creditable 34th at the 2024 Olympic Games and recently set a lifetime best of 2:07:32 in the Valencia Marathon.
The inaugural European Running Championships programme comprises a 10km, half marathon and marathon across the weekend with all three races open to the general public.
