While the athletes competing at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn this week are the stars of the show, the event would not be possible without the dedication of nearly 600 volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes.
From ensuring seamless competition operations to guiding spectators, these volunteers are the backbone of the championships.
Coordinated by the Dutch company EventMakers, the European Indoors has brought together a team of volunteers who are split into two main categories: competition volunteers and those working in off-the-field roles.
The competition volunteers manage the call room, assist with coaching areas and serve as technical officials who are responsible for making sure events are run fairly and in accordance with the rules; their duties can include judging field events, overseeing starts and finishes, and handling protests or rule infractions. Off the field, volunteers take on a range of responsibilities from ticket scanning and ushering to accreditation management, media support and even transportation.
Many of the competition volunteers have prior experience in national athletics events and are often members or former members of athletics clubs. The off-the-field volunteers come from various backgrounds, the majority of them from the Netherlands but about six per cent of them have travelled from abroad to be part of the event. Calls for volunteers closed in early December, reflecting the enthusiasm for being part of a major international sporting event such as this.
What Drives People to Volunteer?
For many, volunteering at these championships offers a unique, behind-the-scenes experience and the chance to meet like-minded people. Beyond the thrill of being involved, volunteering also has a deeper social impact. Some use the experience to combat loneliness, integrate into a community and form lasting friendships. “This social aspect is one of the most rewarding parts of volunteer coordination,” says Marleen Aerts of EventMakers.
EventMakers goes the extra mile to ensure that volunteers feel valued. Personal connections are emphasised, with efforts made to know each volunteer by name. In addition to a meaningful experience, volunteers receive a special clothing package, quality food and drinks, fun memorabilia and a celebratory gathering at the end of the event to show appreciation for their efforts.
Encouraging Future Volunteers
For anyone considering volunteering at a European Athletics event in the future, Aerts has a simple message: "Take the jump and sign up! Go for an unforgettable experience and take a peek into the world of athletics events." With opportunities to contribute, connect and create memories, volunteering offers a unique way to be part of the sport beyond the stands.
And as the action unfolds at the European Indoor Athletics Championships, the dedication of the volunteers will ensure that the event runs smoothly, allowing athletes to shine on the track and field while the unsung heroes work diligently behind the scenes.
