French triple jumper leapt out to a world leading 17.46m at an indoor
meeting in Levin on Saturday.

France’s 2010 European Athletics Rising Star of the Year Teddy Tamgho started his season in impressive fashion by becoming the first triple jumper in the world this year to go over 17 metres.

Tamgho, 21, went out to 17.46m at a local meeting in Lievin on Saturday night.

He holds the world indoor record at 17.90m, which he set when winning the gold medal at the 2010 World Indoor Championships.

There was also a personal best for shot putter Gaëtan Bucki with 20.35m, improving on his previous mark of 20.01m, which was a national indoor record when he achieved it in 2007 although the current French indoor record stands at 20.42m to Yves Niaré from 2009.

Elsewhere in France on Saturday, pole vaulter Jerome Clavier won the Perche Elite Tour competition in Villeurbanne with new absolute personal best of 5.81m, the 2005 European Athletics U23 Championships bronze medallist improving on his mark of 5.80m, which was also achieved indoors, from three years ago.

The French athletics federation announced on Friday that distance runner Hassan Chahdi had been voted, via a public poll on their website www.athle.com, as their athlete of the month for December.

Chahdi won the men’s under 23 gold medal at the 2010 SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Albufeira, Portugal.

He picked up 63 per cent of the vote to win by a convincing margin, with his compatriot and closet rival in Albufeira, silver medallist Florian Carvalho getting 14 per cent and again having to settle for second place.

Abdellatif Meftah and Morhad Amdouni got 13 and 11 per cent of the vote for third and fourth place respectively, after finishing fourth and fifth in the men’s senior race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships last month.
