Audrey Werro is planning to compete in both the 400m and 800m at the Swiss Championships in Zurich on 25-26 July.
The Swiss Championships will be streamed live on the European Athletics website (geoblocked in Switzerland).
This will be Werro’s first 800m since the Paris Diamond League on 30 June when she improved her world lead to 1:53.80 to inch even closer to Jarmila Kratochvilova’s 43-year-old world record. She became the first athlete in history to record multiple sub-1:54 800m clockings having clocked 1:53.98 in Stockholm on 7 June.
But before the 800m heats on Saturday afternoon, Werro is planning to take to the blocks in the heats of the 400m. She is currently the fastest Swiss athlete over the distance in 2026 having set a season’s best of 51.33 in Fribourg on 1 July, the last time Werro has raced at any distance.
It was at the Swiss Championships last year that Werro began to fulfil her vast promise. Having just won the European U23 800m title, Werro won the Swiss title in a gun-to-tape 1:56.29 as a precursor to her victory in the Diamond League final and a sixth-place finish in the 800m at the World Athletics Championships.
Kambundji on the comeback trail
The women’s 100m is arguably the most competitive event of the programme featuring Géraldine Di Tizio-Frey, Salomé Kora, Ajla Del Ponte and Xenia Buri, all of whom have run inside the qualifying time of 11.18 for the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham which begin on 10 August.
And the event will be fortified by the return of 2022 and 2024 European 200m champion Mujinga Kambundji who made her comeback from maternity leave earlier this month. Kambundji clocked 11.33 in her first race of the year on home soil in Bulle less than a fortnight ago.
Other star names in action include reigning European indoor and outdoor champion Angelica Moser in the pole vault, European 200m champion and bronze medallist Timothé Mumenthaler and William Reais in the 100m and 200m as well as world heptathlon leader Annik Kalin and 2023 European indoor champion Jason Joseph in the 100m hurdles and 110m hurdles respectively.
However, notable absentees include Simon Ehammer, Ditaji Kambundji and Dominic Lobalu, all of whom are recovering from mid-season injuries.
