With three weeks to go until the Madrid 2025 European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division in Madrid, key German athletes logged significant victories in their home country over the weekend (7-8 June).

Hammer thrower Merlin Hummel landed a lifetime best of 81.23m at the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger meeting Fränkisch-Crumbach on Sunday (8), maintaining his improvement to go third in this year’s world lists. 

The 23-year-old won silver at the Espoo 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships and was fourth at last year’s Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships.

Meanwhile in cold conditions in Rehlingen, Olympic, world and European gold medallist Malaika Mihambo won the women’s long jump 6.71m (+1.4m/s) and Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye topped the women’s shot put with 19.06m. 

At the same meeting, which was a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, Great Britain’s Alastair Chalmers clocked a 48.30 personal best to win the men’s 400m hurdles to go eighth in the world list and second in Europe this year. 

Wlodarczyk sets season's best

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland landed a season’s best 71.51m winning the women’s hammer at the Taiwan Open, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze event on Saturday (7).

In Antony, France, European U18 silver medallist Lucas Domergue clocked 13.37 (+0.1) in the 110 m hurdles, setting a European U18 lead on Saturday (7). And in Geneva, Switzerland, European 200m champion Timothé Mumenthaler set a lifetime best of 10.24 (+1.0m/s) in the 100m.

In Craiova, Romania on Sunday (8) European indoor men’s shot put champion Andrei Toader won with 20.51m at the Iolanda Balas Soter Memorial.

Perez wins in front of home fans

Meanwhile, at the XXXVII Gran Premio Cantones de A Coruna de Marcha, a World Athletics Race Walking Tour Gold event in Spain, Olympic, world and European gold medallist Maria Perez won the women’s 20km race in 1:27:22. 

It was the Spaniard’s third victory of the season, which also included a 35km win at the European Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Poděbrady, Czechia on 18 May.
