Lea Meyer of Germany set a world lead in the 2000m steeplechase at the ISTAF event in Berlin on Sunday (27).

A European silver medallist over the standard 3000m steeplechase distance, she proved she was in great shape as she on in 5:57.76 ahead of Jolanda Kallabis, the world U20 bronze medallist over 1500m, who clocked a personal best of 6:04.79 in second place.

 

Germany’s major stars came out for one of the nation’s biggest annual events in front of 28,500 spectators at the World Athletics Continental Tour silver event.

World leader Julian Weber won the men’s javelin with 84.03m ahead of Polish duo Dawid Wegner, who set a personal best of 83.40m, and Cyprian Mrzyglod with 81.81m. 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Rohler was fourth with 80.55m. 

 

Olympic, world and European gold medal winner Malaika Mihambo won the women’s long jump with 6.73m (+1.4m/s) but Olympic shot put champion Yemisi Ogunleye was surprisingly beaten Sweden's Fanny Roos. Ogunleye’s best effort was 18.88m, 16 centimetres shy of Roos’ winning throw.

In the men’s pole vault, Türkiye's Ersu Sasma cleared a national record of 5.92m for victory on countback ahead of European indoor gold medallist Menno Vloon of the Netherlands.

Norway's world 1500m bronze medallist Narve Gilje Nordas won over the mile in a personal best of 3:47.68 ahead of Italy's Federico Riva and Germany's Robert Farken who both set national records of 3:48.11 and 3:48.83 respectively.

Kamga sets Swedish record in discus 

Vanessa Kamga improved her Swedish discus record to 65.67m for victory at the Folksam Grand Prix in Gothenburg, a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze event, on Saturday (26) evening.

Kamga, who won the European Throwing Cup in March, added 53 centimetres to her previous Swedish record to defeat a strong line-up including Portugal’s European bronze medallist Liliana Ca (63.32m) and Germany’s Shanice Craft (62.41m).

“It was a great series! I already felt in Varberg earlier this week [where she threw 64.00m) that I didn't get everything out of it, and I don't really feel that today either, so I'm excited for all the competitions that are coming: Swedish Championships, Finnkampen and the World Championships,” she said. 

Great Britain’s Morgan Lake also continued her excellent recent form by clearing 1.95m for victory in the high jump on countback from Poland’s Maria Zodzik with Sweden’s European indoor bronze medallist Engla Nilsson third with 1.92m.

Other highlights included Wictor Petersson winning the shot put with 21.13m and Oskar Edlund winning the 400m hurdles in a lifetime best of 49.00.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Swiss European indoor champion Ditaji Kambundji won in 12.52 (+0.3m/s) the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser in 12.57. 

Poland’s Sulek-Schubert wins on home soil

2022 European silver medallist Adrianna Sulek-Schubert claimed her third heptathlon victory at the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial in Nakło nad Notecią across the weekend (26-27). The Pola scored 6287 points to beat Germany’s Vanessa Grimm (6249 points) and Austria's Verena Mayr (6159 points). 

In the men’s decathlon, there was a Czech 1-2 with Ondrej Kopecky setting a meeting record of 8254 points to beat Vilem Strasky, who set a personal best 8136 in second and Estonia's Risto Lillemets third in 8107.

Herbiet sets Belgian 10km record in Berlin

European half marathon champion Chloe Herbiet from Belgium set a Belgian 10km record of 31:12 as she won the women’s race at the Berlin City Night Runners event on Saturday (26) in 31:12 PB.

Second was Great Britain’s three-times European medallist on the track, Eilish McColgan in 31:31 and third was Germany’s Esther Pfeiffer in 31:39. 

It was an all-German podium in the men’s race with Pfeiffer’s husband Hendrik winning in 28:27 ahead of Filimon Abraham in 28:30 and Aaron Bienenfeld in 28:34.
