World and European indoor champion Andy Diaz Hernandez set a world lead in the triple jump in Barletta on Friday (3) evening.
With his one and only valid effort of the entire competition, Diaz jumped 17.72m to add one centimetre to the world lead which previously belonged to Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo.
"I had a good feeling on the runway and there was a great atmosphere. I wanted to surpass Pichardo, and I did, although I'm aiming for more," said Diaz as quoted by FIDAL.
Diaz will be looking to add the European outdoor triple jump title to his indoor crown in Birmingham from 10-16 August. And if he wins gold in the Alexander Stadium, he will emulate his coach Fabrizio Donato who won this title in 2012.
European triple jump lead for Ion in Craiova
European indoor silver medallist Diana Ana Maria Ion set a big lifetime best and European lead in the triple jump on home soil in Craiova on Saturday (4).
The Romanian recorded a mark of 14.59m, smashing her previous lifetime best of 14.31m which she set at the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships and moving to the top of the 2026 European list, supplanting Italy’s Daria Derkach's mark of 14.51m.
Reigning European indoor champion Bozhidar Saraboyukov produced another big jump on home soil in Plovdiv on Saturday. The Bulgarian recorded a mark of 8.24m in the long jump.

European U23 champion Jonas Phijffers from the Netherlands set a season's best of 44.72 in the 400m in Leuven, Belgium on Saturday. Belgium's Julien Watrin clocked 49.18 in the 400m hurdles.
France's Jordan Terrasse clocked a PB of 1:44.39 in the 800m in Decines on Saturday. Clare Entresangle improved to 9:17.88 in the 3000m steeplechase.
Kulibay Encu improved his Turkish 400m record to 45.27 in Izmir on Saturday, beating European U23 champion Ismail Nezir who set a PB of 45.34.
