An important milestone in preparations for the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships — expected to reach millions of international viewers — is taking place this week (5-7) with the successful hosting of the World Broadcast Meeting at the event’s host venue.

Senior representatives from European Athletics, the Local Organising Committee (Athletics Ventures), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and a range of international broadcast partners attended the meeting, including:

  • BBC, GBR
  • FTV, FRA
  • YLE, FIN
  • ARD, GER
  • ZDF, GER
  • RTÉ, IRE
  • NRK, NOR
  • SVT, SWE

The session laid the groundwork for ensuring that one of next year’s biggest global sporting events will engage audiences across Europe and beyond.

Attendees heard insightful and inspiring presentations from European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov, Paul Foster, CEO of The Great Run Company (representing Athletics Ventures), Frédéric Sanz,EBU Head of Summer Sports and Cycling, and Johan Bernhagen, World Feed Director.

Delegates also toured the impressive Alexander Stadium, which will host the Championships from 10–16 August 2026, and took part in breakout sessions focused on content, production, servicing, and coordination.

To open the day’s proceedings, European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov addressed the group:

“Birmingham 2026 will be historic — the first European Athletics Championships ever held in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. A country with deep love and passion for our sport, and the perfect stage to chase greatness.”
