<h2>European Athletics Team Championships</h2>
<p>Italy were crowned champions at the European Athletics Team Championships for the first time in Silesia ahead of reigning champions and hosts Poland and four-time winners Germany.</p>
<p>In a new-look format for the event, all three divisions were held under one roof in the same location across six days as part of the third edition of the European Games in Krakow-Małopolska.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Ireland were the first champions to be anointed in the 3rd Division where Albania's Luiza Gega also created history by becoming the joint most successful athlete in European Athletics Team Championships history, her wins in the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase taking her tally up to 11 victories.</p>
<p>Hungary dominated the 2nd Division, winning the title ahead of Ukraine and Lithuania who pipped Slovenia for the third promotion spot by an agonising 0.5 points. Both Hungary and Lithuania will be making their debuts in the top division of the European Athletics Team Championships in 2025.</p>
<p>In the main spectacle which occupied the last three days of the championships, Italy improved on their runner-up finish from two years ago with a dominant victory. The Italians won seven of the 37 events and tallied a score of 426.5 points ahead of Poland (402.5 points) and Germany (387.5. points) with Spain fourth with 352 points.</p>
<p>At the other end of the table, Norway, T&uuml;rkiye and Belgium occupied the last three places and were relegated into the 2nd Division in 2025. &nbsp;The Belgian team were relegated despite the best efforts of shot putter-turned hurdler Jolien Boumkwo who garnered worldwide admiration and attention after stepping in as a last minute replacement for the injured Anne Zagre in the 100m hurdles.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Individual highlights across the six days included Femke Bol from the newly promoted Netherlands winning the 400m in 49.82 to smash her championship record of 50.37 and Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh winning the discus in the 2nd Division with 69.94m to break the championship record held by his coach Gerd Kanter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The 2025 edition of the European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division will be held in Madrid, Spain from 27-29 June.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>It was a record-breaking week for the European Athletics Team Championships in Maribor and Madrid with 13 championships records, three world leads, eight European leads and 56 national records set across 1st, 2nd and 3rd Division competitions.</strong></p>
<p>It included Ja&euml;l Bestu&eacute;&rsquo;s sensational women&rsquo;s 200m win at the 1st Division in Madrid in 22.19 that was a new championship record, a new Spanish record and a European lead. It was a time that slashed 0.19 from Sandra Myers&rsquo; national record which had stood since 1991.</p>

<p>After a rare fallow period in his career, Olympic, world and European champion Miltiadis Tentoglou re-asserted his global dominance of the men&rsquo;s long jump, soaring to a superb world lead of 8.46m at the 1st Division in Madrid.</p>
<p>Not to outdone, there was a brilliant world lead set at the 2nd Division in Maribor where European champion Victoria Hudson landed her spear at 67.76m, a new Austrian national record. Here&rsquo;s a run down of every record set during the 2025 European Athletics Team Championships:</p>

I used to play football, and I love the team aspect of it, like playing for a team. President pays tribute to athletes and organisers at record-breaking European Athletics Team Championships

<p><strong>Defending champions Italy have moved to the top of the table at the end of another dramatic day at the European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division in Madrid on Saturday (28).</strong></p>
<p>Overnight leaders the Netherlands won both the men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s 4x100m races in new national records. And there was also eye-catching doubles for the Swiss who won both the men&rsquo;s and women&rsquo;s sprint hurdles races and Czechia also savoured victory in both the men&rsquo;s high jump and men&rsquo;s 400m hurdles.</p>
<p>The performance of the evening undoubtedly belonged to Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou setting a championship record and world lead in the men&rsquo;s long jump. Plus former Olympic champions Anita Włodarczyk and Daniel Stahl showed they still have what it takes in the throws&rsquo; circles, winning the women&rsquo;s hammer and men&rsquo;s discus.</p>

<p>But it was a superb night&rsquo;s work for the Czech. It was the best high jump outdoors this year and second overall only to Ukraine's Oluh Doroschuk, who cleared 2.34m to win gold at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships.</p>
<p>20-year-old Italian Matteo Sioli took second with 2.27m and Germany&rsquo;s Tobias Potye was third with 2.24m.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>Dramatic final round decides women's triple jump</h2>
<p>Also in the field, there was a thrilling climax to the women&rsquo;s triple jump. Sweden&rsquo;s Maja &Aring;skag led into the final round by virtue of two 13.99m leaps. But it was a precarious lead with Italy&rsquo;s Erika Saraceni having also leapt to 13.99m in the fifth round.&nbsp;</p>
<p>But in a dramatic final round, Aksag firmed up her advantage with a season&rsquo;s best leap of 14.18m as Saraceni also improved to 14.08m.&nbsp;But in the final action of the evening, Germany&rsquo;s Caroline Joyeux sailed out to 14.42m to snatch victory, just 3cm short of her own European lead.</p>
<h2>World champion Stahl seals discus win for Sweden</h2>

<p>World champion Daniel Stahl won the men&rsquo;s discus with a third round 68.36m way beyond his rivals. Germany&rsquo;s Mika Sosna opening effort of 66.17m was good enough for second place ahead of Great Britain&rsquo;s Lawrence Okoye, whose best throw of 65.83m also came in the first round.&nbsp;</p>

The town is easily accessible by car (A1 motorway) and train. The proximity of large cities such as Utrecht (59 kilometre) and Amsterdam (75 kilometre) and its space and tranquillity make Apeldoorn one of the most popular cities in the Netherlands. The area mainly consists of woods and heath-lands and is a popular destination for tourism, in particular hiking and cycling.

The Dutch royal family has always had close ties with the city. Apeldoorn is home to the stately Loo Palace, the former summer residence of the Dutch royal family and nowadays a national museum. Apeldoorn is possibly the most athletic-minded city in the Netherlands.
