European indoor silver medallist Jan Štefela added 3cm to his personal best as he won the men’s high jump in Madrid 2025 with the second highest leap in the world this year.

The Czechia athlete already had victory in his pocket when he equalled his lifetime best with a first time clearance at 2.30m. He then cleared 2.33m at his second attempt and with confidence at an all-time high, sent the bar further upwards to 2.36m, where he failed.
But it was a superb night’s work for the Czech. It was the best high jump outdoors this year and second overall only to Ukraine's Oluh Doroschuk, who cleared 2.34m to win gold at the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
20-year-old Italian Matteo Sioli took second with 2.27m and Germany’s Tobias Potye was third with 2.24m.
Dramatic final round decides women's triple jump
Also in the field, there was a thrilling climax to the women’s triple jump. Sweden’s Maja Åskag led into the final round by virtue of two 13.99m leaps. But it was a precarious lead with Italy’s Erika Saraceni having also leapt to 13.99m in the fifth round.
But in a dramatic final round, Aksag firmed up her advantage with a season’s best leap of 14.18m as Saraceni also improved to 14.08m. But in the final action of the evening, Germany’s Caroline Joyeux sailed out to 14.42m to snatch victory, just 3cm short of her own European lead.
World champion Stahl seals discus win for Sweden
World champion Daniel Stahl won the men’s discus with a third round 68.36m way beyond his rivals. Germany’s Mika Sosna opening effort of 66.17m was good enough for second place ahead of Great Britain’s Lawrence Okoye, whose best throw of 65.83m also came in the first round.
