Italy’s Nadia Battocletti clipped a second from her 1500m personal best with victory at the 61st Palio Città della Quercia in Rovereto, Italy on Tuesday (2).
The European 10,000m, 5000m, cross country and 10km road champion proved her versatility, winning the 1500m in 3:58.15, just ahead of Australia’s Linden Hall (3:58.70) and USA’s Helen Schlachtenhaufen (4:00.69) in a closely contested race at the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting.
Weir finds form
In the field, former European indoor champion and home favourite Zane Weir impressed in the shot put with a massive throw of 21.84m, the best by a European outdoors this season.
World indoor silver medallist Roger Steen of USA was second with a best of 21.77m and African champion Chuk Enekwechi was third with 21.62m. Italy’s European indoor gold medallist Andy Diaz Hernandez won the men’s triple jump with 17.04m.
Attaoui sets meeting record in 800m
The men’s 800m saw European silver medallist Mohamed Attaoui of Spain blaze to a meeting record of 1:43.56 — the second-fastest time by a European this year — edging out France’s Yanis Meziane (1:43.93) and American Abraham Alvarado (1:44.53).
Whilst the B race was also high quality with Italians Francesco Pernici and Federico Riva running personal bests of 1:44.59 and 1:44.80, respectively. Italy celebrated a home win in the women’s 800m as Eloisa Coiro broke the two-minute barrier with 1:59.51.
Italy’s Anna Polinari clocked a personal best of 51.43 to win the women’s 400m.
