Iceland’s Gudrun Karitas Hallgrimsdottir had one of the best results of her career at the Copenhagen Athletics Games on Monday (22), beating European champion Sarah Fantini and European Throwing Cup gold medallist Katrine Koch Jacobsen to win the women’s hammer.
Hallgrimsdottir’s second-round effort of 73.12m was 76cm shy of her own national record, set earlier this year in Nairobi, but was good enough for victory in the Danish capital.
Italian Fantini’s best throw also came in the second round, when she produced a mark of 72.64m. Crowd favourite Jacobsen of Denmark had to settle for third place with 71.13m in the final round.
Danish record
The women’s 100m hurdles was another high-quality contest, with Norway’s Martine Hjørnevik sprinting to victory in 12.74 (0.5m/s). Ida Beiter Bomme set a new Danish record in second place with 12.79, just 0.02 ahead of European U23 silver medallist Anna Tóth of Hungary, who finished third.
There was also a significant victory for Finland’s Santtu Heikkinen, who won the men’s mile in 3:55.52, outsprinting Uruguay’s Valentin Soca (3:55.70) and Belgium’s world 5000m silver medallist Isaac Kimeli (3:56.24).
The women’s 200m was won in impressive style by Nora Lindahl. The Swedish sprinter, who is switching allegiance to Finland, clocked 22.87 (0.5m/s) for victory.
