Visitors to the 2025 European Running Championships in Brussels-Leuven 12-13 April will also have the opportunity to hear from the leading experts in distance running at a special pre-event conference.
The Scientific Symposium on Long Distance Running Performance will take place on 9am-6pm on Thursday 10 April at the University Sports Centre KU Leuven in Belgium.
International Experts
It will feature internationally-respected experts in endurance running covering areas including exercise physiology, biomechanics, aerodynamics, neuromuscular and mental fatigue, sports engineering, footwear technology, strength training and hypoxic training.
The event is suitable for coaches, athletes, sports scientists, sport performance professionals and recreational runners of all levels with an interest in enhancing both performance and recreational running experiences.
It is a unique opportunity to engage with top experts, explore emerging research, and network with fellow professionals in the field of running sciences.

- Professor Bert Blocken, Heriot Watt University Edinburgh & KU Leuven on “The impact of aerodynamic drag in long-distance running”
- Dr Jelle Habay, Vrije Universiteit Brussels on “Exploring the link between mental fatigue and endurance running performance”
- Professor. Guillaume Millet, Jean Monnet University Saint Etienne on “Neuromuscular fatigue and long-distance running performance”
- Professor Benedicte Vanwanseele, KU Leuven on “Advanced footwear technology: what makes the difference in long-distance running?”
- Professor Bas Van Hooren, Maastricht University on “What is the most economical running technique and how can we train it?”
- Dr. Richard Blagrove, Loughborough University on “Strength training to improve long-distance running performance”
- Dr. Frank Brocherie, France’s National Institute of Sport, Expertise, and Performance (INSEP) on “Hypoxic training for long distance running: from the classical altitude camp to new strategies”
