  • Richter and Okoye among stacked field to compete at Goldenes Oval in Dresden

Four of Europe’s top five discus throwers this year will take to the circle in Germany at the Goldenes Oval, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meet, in Dresden on 31 May.

With Germany’s current world number two Steven Richter, world finalist Henrik Janssen, and European U23 silver and bronze medallist Marius Karges, all set to compete.

Joining them also from the top of the current European rankings is British record holder and 2022 European bronze medallist, Lawrence Okoye.

The meet will act as a mini-preview of the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships this summer as the only athlete currently in the top five European rankings that will be absent is Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh.

Also confirmed in the line-up is another German talent, Mika Sosna, the 2025 European U23 and World University Games silver medallist, although he is yet to compete this year.

However, the European reunion will be disturbed by the world leader and world number two of all time – Australia’s Matthew Denny.

Richter was narrowly edged out by Denny in Ramona when the Australian threw 74.04m to surpass the German’s 74.00m.

Janssen currently sits in fifth in the 2026 European list, and is the only athlete in the top five to have not competed in Ramona this year, a location athletes enjoy due to favourable winds.

The Goldenes Oval may also act as an indicator to see how they all balance up against each other in a stadium ahead of Birmingham 2026.

For the German’s, competing on home soil, it will also be a crucial meet to show how they line up against their countrymen as not all of them will be able to be selected for Birmingham 2026.

Janssen faces the threat of not being selected for the national team, having competed at the last two editions of the European championships, due to the trio of talented young German discus throwers who confidently swept the podium at the Bergen 2025 European Athletics U23 Championships.

Details about live streaming for the 2026 World Athletics Continental Tour at Silver, Bronze and Challenger level will be communicated very soon.
