Lamont Marcell Jacobs ran the third fastest men's 100m in all conditions in history at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open Eisenstadt, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, on Wednesday (1) evening.
After clocking a marginally wind-assisted 9.84 (2.3 m/s) in his heat, Jacobs crested a 4.1 m/s tailwind in the final, blazing to a 9.67 clocking for victory over European 100m bronze medallist Romell Glave (9.76) and world 400m record-holder Wayde van Niekerk from South Africa (9.83).
Jacobs’ time was the third fastest men's 100m in all conditions in history, only surpassed by Usain Bolt’s world record of 9.58 set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin and his Olympic 100m record of 9.63 from London 2012.
"I'm very happy because I'm improving with every race. Of course, it was very windy here, but only Bolt in history has managed to beat this time, and I'm really happy to have achieved such a time," said Jacobs.
And while Jacobs' time in the final was significantly wind-assisted, his performance provides further proof he is approaching his peak form after an injury-riddled 2025 season with the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham from 10-16 August fast approaching.
Jacobs has already broken the 10 second-barrier four times this summer and he will be targeting his third successive European 100m title in Birmingham in August, a feat which hasn't been achieved since Great Britain's Linford Christie in 1994.
There was a home victory in the women's 100m with Magdalena Lindner prevailing in a wind-assisted 11.06 (+3.7), just ahead of her compatriot Christania Williams in 11.08.
Ukraine's Lyudmyla Olyanovska also set a world best of 6:10.09 in the rarely contested one mile race walk.
