With three weeks to go until the European Throwing Cup in Nicosia on 14-15 March, Europe’s leading throwers loosened their arms at several national winter throwing cup competitions at the weekend.

At the German Winter Throwing Championships in Sindelfingen, European U23 silver medallist Nick Thumm won the men’s javelin on Sunday (22) with a personal best 82.03m. It gave him victory ahead of Niklas Sagawe (79.03m) and former world champion Johannes Vetter (78.76m).

Thumm's throw was also the second longest throw in the world this year, albeit with very few high level competitions having taken place yet in 2026.

European U23 gold medallist Steven Richter won the men’s discus with 64.25m and Marike Steinacker, bronze medallist at last year’s European Throwing Cup, won the women’s competition with 64.12m.

Loga goes long in Nice

Meanwhile, at the French Winter Throwing Championships, European bronze medallist Rose Loga improved her personal best to 73.81m to win the women’s hammer. Twice European Throwing Cup bronze medallist Yann Chaussinand won the men’s hammer with 76.85m.

There was also another national victory for the evergreen Mélina Robert-Michon. The 46-year-old won the women’s discus with 59.26m.

Frantzeskakis lets fly in Athens

At the Greek Winter Throwing Championships in Athens, there was an impressive victory in the men’s hammer by Christos Frantzeskakis (76.47m) over Michail Anastasakis (74.20m).

The European Winter Throwing Cup will take place for the second time in Nicosia, Cyprus on 14-15 March and will be live streamed in its entirety on the European Athletics website.
