  • Tumi, Bruni shine on the day of three Italian records
Driven by desire after an injury ruined his chance to run at the Olympic Games in London, Michael Tumi is making up for lost time in style.

With a blistering 60m run at the Italian National Championships in Ancona, Tumi, 23, showed he will be the man to beat at the European Athletics Indoor Championships which start in Göteborg on 1 March.

Tumi had already been equal leader on the European rankings with 6.53 but he took that mark on with an Italian record of 6.51.

His performance is joint-second best in the world this year, with only American Darvis Patton's 6.50 in New York, 24 hours earlier on Saturday, being quicker.

Tumi won the title for a third time as he beat Fabio Cerutti, who was second in 6.68, with Simone Collio third in 6.69.

Now Sweden beckons, and he cannot wait after the disappointment of London 2012.

Tumi said: 'It was difficult having to watch the Olympics on TV. The winter season started well after an injury...yet negative experiences helped me in training.'

Speaking to Fidal.it, he added: 'I knew I was right and that I could improve my previous record of 6:53. I raced here in 6.51, but I cannot even think of doing 6:49. At this point I am going (to Göteborg) with the aim of a medal. I would like was one of the most precious pieces of metal.'

His display will send out a warning across the continent after a weekend of outstanding sprinter showed this event will be one of the most-anticipated at the Championships.

Tumi, from Vicenza, a member of Italy's 4x100m gold-medal relay squad at the European Athletics U23 Championships in Ostrava, now has the advantage on the European Athletics rankings from Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut and Spain's Angel David Rodriguez, who have both run 6.53.

Vicaut had shared the European lead with Tumi, matching that 6.53 at the French National Championships on Saturday before the Italian's splendid performance on Sunday.

It was some day in Ancona as two more Italian records fell, with Roberta Bruni winning the pole vault in 4.60m and Silvano Chesani establishing a new high jump best mark of 2.33m.

Bruni is proving to be quite a star. She is not 19 until a few days after the end of the European Athletics Indoor Championships but the bronze medallist from last year's World Junior Championships is making great progress.

She began 2013 with an indoor personal best of 4.25m, but has now reached this outstanding height which equals the fourth best in Europe this year and eighth in the world.

The world junior record of 4.63m is held by Angelica Bengtsson, of Sweden, and such was the mood of Bruni that she set the bar at 4.65m but missed out.

Bruni, who is still a student and was a clear winner from Giorgia Benecchi in second with 4.40m, said: 'I hope to repeat myself (in Göteborg) and, who knows, maybe even better.'

Chesani was outstanding with his 2.33m to beat Marco Fassinotti with a best of 2.27m which suddenly puts him into medal contention at the European Athletics Indoor Championships.

The only Europeans to have jumped higher this year are Russians Aleksey Dmitrik, with 2.36m, and Sergey Mudrov, with 2.34m.
Chesani, 24, said: 'The title was not enough, I really wanted the record.'
