After an indifferent opening to the season, Olympic long jump champion Miltiadis Tentoglou was back to his best in explosive style at the European Athletics Team Championships 1st Division in Madrid on Saturday with a brilliant world lead and championship record.

The Greek athlete, also the world and European champion, was ill during the indoor season and had, until now, struggled to find the type of form that has also brought him world and European gold.
But in the second round, he sailed out to a world lead of 8.46m (1.1m/s). It bettered his own championship record by 8cm two years ago at Silesia 2021, beat the existing world lead of Mattia Furlani by 9cm and was the Greek athlete’s best mark since the Paris Olympics (8.48m).
He underscored his utter dominance with a fourth round leap of 8.44m (+1.8m/s). It all left the rest of the field floundering in his wake.
Sweden’s 2022 European silver medallist Thobias Montler was the best of the rest with a fourth round 8.08m (+1.5m/s). Furlani, the world indoor gold medallist, managed a second round 8.07m (-0.3m/s).
