European 10,000m leader Efrem Gidey has been named in a nine-strong Ireland team for the European Running Championships in Brussels-Leuven on 12-13 April.

Gidey set an Irish record of 27:26.95 in San Juan Capistrano, USA on Saturday (29).  He is set to race over half marathon distance at the European Running Championships, a distance in which he also holds the national record of 60:51, set in Copenhagen last year.

Gidey was sixth in the men’s 10,000m final at the 2022 Munich European Athletics Championships and won bronze in the men’s U20 race at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon 2019.

Entries are still open for the inaugural European Running Championships, where recreational runners will have the opportunity to run with the elite athletes. Limited places are still available across 10km, half marathon and marathon disciplines.
