After only just surviving the cut off, world indoor champion Larissa Iapachino made her final opportunities count to win the women’s long jump at Madrid 2025 on Sunday (29).

The Italian was languishing in in eighth place after three jumps on 6.63m. But in the fifth round, she leapt out to 6.92m (+0.2m/s) to overtake her great rival Tokyo Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany who had led with a third round 6.84m (0.2m/s).
Mihambo could not improve with three fouls in the latter half of the competition. Portugal’s Agate de Sousa equalled the German’s 6.84m (+1.2m/s). But by virtue of Mihambo’s second round 6.76 (-0.6m/s), she clung on to second place, as the Italian celebrated.
